What is a rotation sensor

Rotation sensors are key measurement devices in many automotive, industrial, and other applications. There are many types of rotation sensors in sizes, capacities and performance levels. The rotation sensor uses a variety of technologies to transmit the torque signal from the rotating shaft, including slip ring, induction, infrared and telemetry. There are many options for installation, output, speed and calibration.

Rotation sensors are widely used in the fastener assembly market to verify the performance of manual and electric torque tools. These strain gauge-based sensors are installed on the output drive of the power tool and measure the torque applied by the tool to the fastener on the actual component. This measurement provides important information about tool shutdown and helps establish specifications for proper assembly.

The rotation sensor provides a method to measure shaft rotation parameters, and when used in conjunction with a speed sensor, it can also measure shaft power. Although they are more expensive and more complicated to install, they are the preferred solution in many situations. For example, a rotation sensor can achieve the desired accuracy by directly measuring the torque on the drive shaft. Rotating the sensor can directly measure and produce the best frequency response.

Rotation sensor selection guide: brushed and brushless models

Accurate measurement of torque applied to rotating drives and fastening applications is an important criterion for evaluating production efficiency and quality assurance in manufacturing and assembly. There are many process monitoring applications that require the use of rotating torque sensors to capture and record traceable measurement results. The rotation sensor is a fine-tuning instrument designed specifically for testing and monitoring torque applications. The rotation sensor is designed for torque evaluation and verification. It is a laboratory-grade instrument commonly used in quality control, R&D, and calibration applications.

For the brushless rotation sensor, some device must be provided to transmit the torque applied on the rotating shaft to the external body, which is fixed without any mechanical contact. There are two main methods of this technique.

One method is to use a changing magnetic field to indicate torsional stress. A magnetometer must be used to measure changes in torsional stress. Magnetometers are usually used to measure changes in the earth's magnetic field. Such sensors may not provide the accuracy of traditional strain gauge transducers, and the manufacturing cost may be higher due to the cost of the magnetometer circuit. Another method is to use standard strain gauge technology and provide electronic equipment to implement the technology. Two functions are required, providing voltage to the strain gauge, and receiving torque information from the central axis. Both are done using a single set of coils, which is a major technological innovation and a more cost-effective method.
