What requirements should be paid attention to when casting aluminum alloy die castings?

Aluminum alloy is widely loved by die-casting factories because of its characteristics that it can be used in many parts and shows very good use effects. Good aluminum alloy die-casting parts have a long service life and are hard and durable, but still, Professional die-casting requirements must be followed.

The casting of aluminum alloy die castings should follow the requirements:

  1. Casting speed: The casting speed of aluminum alloy die castings is directly proportional to the liquid cavity of the ingot. If the casting speed increases, the liquid cavity and temperature gradient of the ingot will increase, and a liquid cavity section will appear at the bottom of the liquid cavity, resulting in large shrinkage stress, which will eventually increase the probability of hot cracks in the ingot, so We should control the speed.
  2. The castings should meet the relevant regulations or the dimensions and deviations required by the drawing or pattern provided by the buyer.
  3. Castings cannot be leaked by hammering, plugging, or dipping.
  4. Liquid level height: The position of the liquid level is also very important. If it is too low, it will increase the thermal crack tendency of the material, and if it is serious, it will affect the casting process. If the liquid level is too high, the degree of segregation of the ingot will be increased. Therefore, there must be an appropriate liquid level, and it will not work if it is too high or too low.
  5. Castings must not have defects such as cracks, cold shuts, sand holes, pores, slag holes, shrinkage porosity, and oxidized slag inclusions.
  6. Casting temperature: A good casting temperature of aluminum alloy die castings will keep the liquid metal in good fluidity, thereby reducing tissue stress and preventing cracks.
  7. The general casting temperature should be determined according to the type of material and the specifications of the ingot. If the temperature is not appropriate, it will increase the internal stress, causing cracks or cracks in the casting. If the temperature is too low, it is not good, because it will cause defects such as cold shut, slag inclusion, and even cracks on the surface of the ingot. If it is serious, it will make the casting unable to continue.
  8. The non-processed surface of the casting should be smooth and flat, and the casting mark should be clear. After cleaning the pouring and riser, it should be flush with the surface of the casting.

What are the effects of various elements on aluminum alloy die castings?

  • Iron: When the iron content is below 6%, it can reduce the adhesion of the mold.
  • Titanium: It can refine the structure of crystal clusters, improve the habit, and reduce the cracking sound of alloy hot cracking. For the packaging of aluminum alloy die-casting products, the most important thing is to protect the goods inside, but the exquisite appearance of the packaging box is also something we need to consider.
  • Silicon: It is an important element in aluminum alloys. It can improve the casting properties of alloys, and silicon and aluminum can form solid solutions.
  • Manganese: Manganese can reduce the influence of iron in aluminum alloys, turning iron flakes into needle-like parts into fine grain groups, 5% is moderate.
  • Magnesium: Three changes and one increase can be added to increase the strength and concession point, machinability, and durability.
  • Nickel: It can increase strength and hardness, and it is not afraid of corrosion when sliding down, and it is exactly the same as iron.
  • Zinc: Zinc has fluidity, increases but does not decrease hot brittleness, and stabilizes and decreases without fear of corrosion.

Aluminum alloy and aluminum comparison

We know that the main components of aluminum alloy are aluminum, copper, magnesium, and silicon. In order to enhance the characteristics of aluminum, we add these elements to improve the use effect of the material. Let's take a look at the changes after adding aluminum elements to aluminum alloy:

  • Strength and hardness: Adding appropriate alloying elements can significantly improve the strength and hardness of aluminum alloy die castings. Common alloying elements such as copper, magnesium, and zinc can form solid solution strengthening or precipitation strengthening phases to increase the tensile strength and hardness of the alloy.
  • Toughness and impact resistance: The addition of certain alloying elements can improve the toughness and impact resistance of aluminum alloy die castings. For example, elements such as copper and magnesium can improve the toughness of aluminum alloys, making them ductile and impact-resistant when stressed.
  • Corrosion resistance: Appropriate alloying elements can improve the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy die castings, making them more durable in harsh environments. For example, adding zinc can improve the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy, making it have better corrosion resistance in moisture or chemical media.
  • Processability: Appropriate alloying elements can improve the processability of aluminum alloy die castings. For example, the addition of silicon can improve the lubricity of aluminum alloys and reduce the coefficient of friction, making it easier for aluminum alloys to fill mold cavities and obtain better surface quality.
  • Heat treatment response: Different alloying elements have different responses to heat treatment. The addition of some alloying elements can improve the heat treatment effect of aluminum alloys, such as enhancing solid solution and precipitation strengthening, so as to further improve the performance of the material.

Different aluminum alloy materials have different alloy element compositions and content ranges. The specific selection of appropriate alloying elements needs to be comprehensively considered according to the application requirements, mechanical properties, and processing properties of aluminum alloys.
