The conductivity of water is carefully controlled and the spark is very carefully controlled and located so that it only affects the surface of the material. This provides an excellent environment for the EDM process and leads to a very high level of performance.
EDM is a non-traditional cutting process in which conductive materials are cut into electrically charged copper or brass wires using electricity. Wire Electrical Discharge Machined (WEDM) uses metal wires to "cut" or shape a workpiece (often a conductive material) into a thin electrode wire that follows a precisely programmed path. Also known as wire cutting, wire discharge or wire cutting, it is also known by its more common name wire electric discharge (EED).
In wire EDM, the wires carry one side of the electric charge, and the workpiece carries the charge of the other side. When a wire comes near a component, the attraction between electric charges creates a controlled spark that melts or evaporates microscopic particles in the material.
Wire EDM cuts the conductive material with electric current, creating a smooth surface that does not require further refinement or polishing. This process is used to cut plates, punching dies and dies made of conductive materials, including carbides, which are more difficult to machine with other methods, such as steel. Thin strands of metal wire are passed through a cutting plate at a rate of about 1,000 volts per square inch (0.5 millimeters per second).
X - Y plane, controlled by the CNC, the guides can be moved in two directions: up and down. The upper guide can control the movement of the off-axis and move it up or down, creating the ability to cut tapering or changing shapes. EDM wires ( WCEDM) conduct an electrified current via tensioned thin wires that act as cathodes and guide the desired cutting path (kerfs).
This increased precision allows complex three-dimensional cuts and provides a very precise perforated plate for removal as well as the possibility to refine the size and shape of the wires.
While conventional eroding machines do not always produce narrow corners or very complex patterns, the increased precision of ED-M wires enables complex cutting patterns. SinkerEDM, also known as a dive, uses wires of different shapes and sizes, as well as different types of perforations, to remove material from the workpiece. The wire cutting device is operated with a computer controlled numerical device (CNC) that can control the wires in various ways, thus offering greater flexibility.
The electrodes are usually made of graphite, but other materials such as copper, nickel, copper oxide or other metals are also used. The geometric characteristics of the electrodes can be adjusted to meet the required specifications.
Wire Cut Electrical Discharge Machining is best suited for work where electric erosion is used. Workpiece and electrodes are immersed in a dielectric liquid (oil or synthetic oil) and the machine automatically guides the electrodes to the workpieces using CNC technology. In wire EDM, the strength of the electric charge breaks through the barrier between the selected liquid when the electrode approaches a workpiece. A spark is created when a small amount of material erodes microscopic particles by melting or evaporating.
Wire EDM service is typically used for cutting carbides that are sometimes difficult to manipulate with other cutting methods. Perfectly straight and burr - free machining can be achieved with WireEDM machining.
By eliminating cutting stresses on the material, extremely thin metal profiles can be produced without the need for additional tools or tools such as drills.
Wire EDM enables the use of hard, brittle and fragile materials that are electrically conductive. By using electrical discharges from fine wires, WireEDM machines are able to cut precise and complex shapes. This has its disadvantages, however, as the impacts can create stresses that distort the material during the cutting process and cause the tools to wear out quickly.
While wires can create an endless array of different shapes, even tiny contours and holes can form when the material heats, softens and hardens.
In order to make wire EDM machines capable of doing this, force must be applied to the part at the right time. Wire EDD projects can be set up and completed in less time, which means you can get the essential parts out quicker.
