what is die casting hot and cold chamber?

May 23, 2023 Leave a message

Hot chamber dies casting means that after the metal is melted in the furnace of the die casting machine, the molten metal is directly injected into the heating chamber of the die casting machine, and then the heating chamber is moved into the die casting chamber, and the molten metal is injected into the mold by pressure for molding.

Cold-chamber die-casting means that outside the die-casting machine, the metal is melted by heating the furnace, and then the molten metal is injected into the cold chamber using an injection machine, and the molten metal is injected into the mold by pressure for molding.

The biggest difference between the two die-casting methods is the injection method of molten metal. Cold chamber die casting and hot chamber die casting are also variations of the high-pressure die casting process. Therefore, the process of hot chamber casting and cold chamber casting is very similar. However, their scope of application is different. This article will briefly discuss the differences between these two processes in detail.

Temperature range of hot chamber die casting and cold chamber die casting

Hot chamber equipment processes low-temperature non-ferrous alloys. The highest temperature for alloys that can be safely die cast in a hot chamber machine is around 450°C, including alloys such as zinc, magnesium, and lead. In contrast, cold room equipment handles high-temperature non-ferrous alloys. It typically processes metal alloys at temperatures of 600°C or above, including alloys such as aluminum, copper, brass, etc.

furnace location

Alloy melting furnaces are located in separate places for both processes. Hot cell equipment has a built-in furnace to melt the metal. Therefore, the metal is fed directly into the mold cavity through the gooseneck. In cold chamber die-casting installations, the melting furnace is located outside. The molten metal must be fed into the machine using automatic or manually operated ladles.

Production time

Hot chamber machines offer significantly higher casting cycles than cold chamber machines. Although the two pieces of equipment work very similarly, cold chamber casting has a longer cycle time due to the manual handling of the molten metal.

Die life

Hot chamber and cold chamber machines are constructed from the same materials. Hot chamber casting uses alloys with low melting points, which has less impact on the mold. So, it lasts longer. Conversely, mold conditions in cold chamber machines degrade faster because the molten metal has a higher temperature. The die-casting alloy is melted in a furnace located inside the equipment, and the die-casting alloy is melted in a separate furnace located outside the equipment. The casting cycle is significantly shortened, so it has a higher production capacity; therefore, the production capacity is smaller, suitable for high melting point alloys, and has a higher production capacity. Short tool life and minimal safety measures require more safety measures. Commonly used metal alloys are zinc, lead, etc. Commonly used metal alloys are aluminum, copper, brass, magnesium, etc.

Manufacturers who provide hot and cold chamber die-casting services

MindWell is a die-casting manufacturing company with strong core competitiveness in China. We have independent intellectual property rights, complete production workshops, and experienced technicians, equipped with advanced hot and cold room equipment.

Cold Chamber Die Casting Services

Our strength is our cold chamber die-casting machine capacity and we are experts in aluminum die-casting. We can produce machines of various specifications. Equipment capacity ranges from 140T to 2000T, and we have the ability to handle any die-casting project from small to large volume. In addition, we have in-house cleaning and surface treatment facilities for die castings. At present, Longhua has cooperated with the Hefei Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to upgrade the die-casting machine and automation equipment and has applied the advanced technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to our equipment production. Therefore, you can get one-stop cooling from us. Chamber Die Casting Solutions.

Hot Chamber Die Casting Services

Our hot chamber die-casting equipment ranges in tonnage from 60 tons to 250 tons. Therefore, we can handle various die-casting projects. Zinc die casting mainly uses hot chamber equipment.

Hot and cold cavity casting, which one is better?

Both hot chamber die casting and cold chamber die casting are great ways to produce metal parts. However, the hot chamber process has some advantages over the cold chamber process. It is faster, more economical, safer, and offers longer tool life than the cold chamber process. These characteristics easily lead one to believe that hot chamber casting is better than cold chamber casting.

However, their scope of application is different. Hot chamber die casting needs to heat the heating chamber before injecting molten metal, but it can be cast quickly after injection, so it is suitable for making larger metal castings. The cold chamber dies casting needs to melt the metal first and then inject it. The injection time is longer, but it can accurately control the cast product. Therefore, cold chamber dies casting is suitable for the production of small and delicate metal castings and high-quality products.

Therefore, it is difficult to rule out a relative advantage of one approach being better than the other. Hot and cold chamber casting processes entirely different kinds of alloys. For example, you can only die-cast aluminum in a cold room environment. Simply put, when you're dealing with alloys with high melting points, you don't have a lot of options.
