The advantages and disadvantages of 3D printing molds

advantage

· Free design: 3D printing allows complex thin-walled geometric shapes to be created in one step without any tools. In traditional pattern making, the basic parts are usually made of metal (molded or machined), and then fine-tuned manually with tools that grind, cut, polish or weld the final mold master. Certain types of structures cannot be created by traditional methods, and compared with traditional methods, the use of 3D printing can often achieve higher geometric complexity and accuracy.

· Low cost: All that is needed is digital files, printing materials and the printer itself. There is no need to use multiple machines, each machine has a dedicated staff to create the main mode. 3D printers do not need to be monitored while they are working, and may not even need to buy a printer-just study third-party 3D printing services, such as Craftcloud.

· Production speed: The traditional pattern production process may take several weeks and requires a lot of manual labor as mentioned above. Through the automatic 3D printing process, you can print out patterns in a few hours or days. If the pattern ends up unusable, the digital design can be easily modified and printed again and again.

· Reduce raw materials and waste: Since 3D printing is an additional process, all you need is the materials used for the final printed pattern product. In contrast, in machining, you need to decompose a large amount of material (such as aluminum) into the desired shape, resulting in aluminum chips.

· Eliminate model inventory: Especially for heavy industry, it is often necessary to store the master model of industrial parts in case the parts need to be replaced. Using digital files eliminates the need to store models, as new models can be 3D printed quickly and cost-effectively.

Although 3D printing has many advantages compared to traditional casting processes-faster, cheaper, and more precise-it is not always the perfect solution. There are disadvantages to consider.

Disadvantage

· High initial investment: 3D printing is a relatively new technology, especially large printers that can be expensive. Although 3D printers can quickly save investment costs, you still need to consider whether buying a printer yourself is the right choice or whether you should consider outsourcing.
