Zinc alloy die-casting
Zinc alloy die-casting has high mechanical properties and can be used to die-cast various complex and thin-walled castings. The castings can be subjected to various surface treatments, especially have good electroplating properties, and have good room temperature performance.
After zinc alloy is die-cast into a casting, it will shrink in size, and the alloy composition has a greater impact on the size change. The size of zinc alloy castings that do not contain copper is relatively stable, and the size of general zinc-aluminum alloy castings does not change much.
Die-cast zinc alloy material
Die-cast zinc alloy is a common engineering alloy, mainly composed of zinc, aluminum, copper, magnesium, and other elements. The following are die-cast zinc alloy material models:
- ZAMAK 2: Contains aluminum and copper, has excellent strength and corrosion resistance, and is used to manufacture parts in automobiles and electronic products, such as casings for automobile transmission systems, casings and plugs for electronic equipment, etc.
- ZAMAK 3: Contains aluminum, copper, and magnesium, has good fluidity and processing properties, and is often used to make small parts, such as locks, handles, pull tabs, zippers, and accessories.
- ZAMAK 5: Contains aluminum, copper, magnesium, and manganese, has high strength and hardness, and is suitable for manufacturing medium-sized parts, such as electrical casings, lamps, bicycle accessories and parts of automobile braking systems.
- ZA-8: Contains aluminum, copper and magnesium, has excellent strength and corrosion resistance, and is suitable for manufacturing parts with complex shapes, such as automobile parts, industrial equipment parts and building components.
- ZA-12: Contains aluminum, copper and magnesium, has high strength and hardness, and is suitable for manufacturing high-load parts, such as hoods, gearboxes, pumps and valves.
- ZA-27: Contains aluminum, copper and zinc, has extremely high strength and hardness, and is suitable for manufacturing high-load and high-strength parts, such as motorcycle engine parts, oil pumps, industrial boiler parts and agricultural machinery parts.
- The above are some common die-cast zinc alloy material models. Different models have different characteristics and uses. Zinc alloy properties
The working range of zinc alloy is narrow. When the temperature is below 0°C, its impact toughness decreases sharply, and when the temperature exceeds 100°C, the mechanical properties decrease significantly.
Zinc alloy is prone to aging, and the aging phenomenon is manifested by volume expansion, strength reduction, and plasticity reduction. The main reason is that the solubility of impurities such as lead, tin, and cadmium in zinc is too small. Therefore, the impurity content should be strictly controlled during material selection and smelting.
The role and influence of zinc alloy die-casting elements
Among the zinc alloy components, the effective elements are aluminum, copper, and magnesium; the harmful elements are lead, cadmium, tin, and iron.
- The role of alloy elements: Aluminum is the main alloying element in zinc alloy. It can greatly improve the fluidity of zinc liquid, thereby improving its casting performance. When the aluminum content is 5%, the eutectic alloy has the best fluidity, but the impact strength is low. Aluminum in the range of 3.9% to 4.3%, on the one hand, strengthens the alloy, effectively refines the grains, and improves strength; on the other hand, it enables the alloy to have better casting properties. Aluminum has the effects of grain refinement and solid solution strengthening, which can reduce the speed of the reaction between zinc and iron. When the aluminum content exceeds 4.3%, the alloy becomes brittle and castings are difficult to process. When the aluminum content is less than 3.9%, thin-walled parts are difficult to form and may crack during cooling after casting.
- The function of magnesium is to reduce intergranular corrosion, refine the structure of zinc alloy, improve the anti-wear properties of zinc alloy, and increase strength and
- hardness. It is generally controlled within the range of 0.03%~0.08%. If it exceeds 0.08%, it will easily cause thermal brittleness, thermal cracking, and reduced fluidity.
- Copper can improve the strength, hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the alloy. When the copper content exceeds 1.25%, the casting size is unstable and the fluidity of the alloy is reduced.
- Lead is in the form of fine spherical particles or surface films distributed between grain boundaries and dendrites, causing intergranular corrosion.
- Tin and zinc form a low melting point (198°C) eutectic, causing intergranular corrosion to reduce toughness and cause thermal embrittlement.
- Cadmium exists in a solid solution. Causes thermal brittleness, reduces corrosion resistance and fluidity, and causes intergranular corrosion.
- Iron and zinc form compounds, forming hard points in die castings, affecting processing and electroplating polishing. In addition, iron also reacts with aluminum to produce FeAl and dross, causing the aluminum content of the casting to decrease.
The hazards of impurity elements lead, tin, and cadmium
Lead, tin, and cadmium elements are impurity elements in zinc alloys and must be controlled within standards (0.004%). If the amount of lead and tin exceeds the standard (0.007%), it will not have an impact on the product and cause plating blistering in a short period of time. However, products returned from electroplating will slowly blister after being stored for a period of time. If the lead and tin elements exceed the standard by more than ten or dozens of times, the pressed castings will be hot cracked, broken, and blackened. The surface will be pitted after polishing and intergranular corrosion will occur internally, resulting in blistering after electroplating.
The selection of zinc alloy is a key part of making electroplated products. Alloy electroplating products are absolutely not allowed to exceed the standard of lead and tin. It is necessary to control the nozzle material return to the furnace, and the impurity elements lead, tin, and cadmium brought into the electroplating waste products.
